Monday 18th April

Today we headed in different directions. The fashion / textiles group headed first to Parsons Design school. This was a real eye-opener as to how design schools operate and how to get into them,, even as an overseas student.  It was a very impressive establishment with great facilities and great access to the New York design industry, they actively prompt internships and help to ensure that students are paid whilst gaining the experience.  They really seemed to prepare their students well for life in the fashion industry.

From here we shot into times square for a look and a spot of shopping.

We met up with the other group for lunch at the and headed for Macy's for a tour of the biggest department store in the world! WOW!  We were a little jaded from walking so much and were grateful for the seats in the store.

A quick snack, then off to meet Tom at Tom Cody design.  Not the real Tom, a New Zealander who works in sales for the real Tom. It was very interesting for the students to learn about the surface pattern process from the sales point of view; these guys supply design work in the form of a photoshop file with complete control to their clients, Ralph Lauren is a major client. They supply many designers around the world, Mark (chief salesperson) travels all over the world with suitcases full of fabrics that clients then choose and change according to their target market, the average price for a design is $600 US. Its also becoming clear how much an advantage NZ students have over US students, most of them do not have access to the Adobe suite at school , they have to take all those classes once they get to uni - so our students are leaps and bounds ahead in some areas.

Some of us headed home to catch up on some rest.  Others carried on with some very important shopping.

Looking forward to a quiet night in!! Broadway show tomorrow night.
